AUTHOR AND GUIDE: TOMISLAV AUGUSTINČIĆ
On Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 6 p.m. we will organise an urban tour titled Culture of Remembrance of the People’s Liberation Struggle in Trešnjevka. The gathering location and the starting point of the walk is the corner of Fallerovo promenade and Baštijanova street. We will end the tour in the park across BAZA where all those interested can take part in the workshop on the same theme. The author and the guide of the walk and the workshop is ethnologist Tomislav Augustinčić.
“During the socialist Yugoslavia, more than 423 memorial sites were erected in public areas of the City of Zagreb, honouring individuals, events, places and actions of the People’s Liberation Struggle. Of these, 47 memorial sites were placed in Trešnjevka, and only 13 have been preserved and are present until today in the public space of Trešnjevka. Socialist monuments in Trešnjevka were not only artefacts that documented and recounted history, but also symbols of a radically different system of meanings, values, practices, and actions. They were also places for solidarity, gathering and strengthening the community. The working-class and antifascist history of Trešnjevka will be presented through the touring of selected locations, and it will open space for contemporary thinking of how and what to remember today in Trešnjevka. It will offer a problem-based presentation of themes of women’s history, the proletariat, cultural production and remembrance.
The duration of the walk is 2 hours after which there will be a workshop in which the strategies of “erasure” and “oblivion” that marked the lives of socialist monuments of Trešnjevka will will be appropriated to find new ways of creating and commemorating. The workshop is planned for 8 p.m. in the park in front of the Budweiser Pub (Adžijina 16). It is not necessary to register for the workshop. All those interested participants of the tour can join the workshop.”
